In some of my talks and workshops I have mentioned that I make my own toothpaste. People ask me for the recipe, and yet I don't generally do things by recipe so I haven't been able to tell people exactly how I make it. I understand it would help some people to have at least a basic guideline for homemade toothpaste, so this article will explain how I do it.
Before we get into the hands on stuff, here are a few of the reasons I make my own toothpaste are as follows:
- Nearly all commercially available toothpastes are made primarily from glycerin. According to the research of Dr Judd glycerin coats the teeth and prevents calcium ions from being absorbed directly into the teeth from the food in our mouth. His book on Good Teeth from Birth to Death is viewable online here. His website use to be at gerardjudd.com but it is not there at the time of writing this. You can read his key info on other sites, here and here.
- It's fun
- I can avoid the poison in normal toothpaste (fluoride)
- I can include ingredients that are beneficial to the teeth and gums
- My toothpaste is vastly superior to ANY I have ever seen on sale in shops, including all the "natural" toothpastes in health food stores. Why buy second-rate toothpaste when you can make the best stuff at home.
Dr Judd recommends just using plain bar soap for brushing your teeth. I do that when I don't have my magic paste available.
Here is a basic recipe:
- Bentonite clay power - 4 heaped table spoons (click here to find a source for this in Nth America)
- Oregano oil (organic) - 20 to 30 drops (less if it is too strong for your liking)
- Propolis extract - 10 to 30 drops (click here to find it online)
- Cayenne pepper extract (or power if extract no available) - enough to make it noticeably hot. Try 20 drops. Add more if you wish. The heat strength of cayenne can vary greatly, so you will have to experiemnt with the amount. Here is one source in Nth America / Canada. Google for other ones.
- Sodium bicarbonate powder - 2 teaspoons
- Ascorbic acid - 1 teaspoon (only add is also using baking soda, above)
- Atomidine - 10 drops. Available from Heritage Products.
- Calcium phosphate (or calcium phosphate) - you can get this in a paste form, or some high quality calcium supplements are made from this. In the later case, you would cruch three or more tables into a powder and add to the mix
- Neem powder - can make a nice addition. Perhaps a teaspoon or two.
- Peppermint essential oil (organic, steam extracted) - a few drops for flavour, if you want to. It is not necessary though.
I have listed these ingredients in order of importance. Try to include everything in 1 to 4, and preferably 1 to 6.
Add enough pure water (it won't be much) to the mix in order to form a thick paste. Store this paste in a small sealed glass jar. Just dunk your bruch into the jar to get enough on the brush for cleaning your teeth. You don't need to use much. Experience and feeling will inform you how much to use.
Feel free to adjust this recipe to your liking.
The oregano oil is quite strong in taste and you may find it too much at first. Your mouth will quickly adjust to the taste over somes days and weeks though.
If your teeth are deteriorating in a chronic way I suggest doing research into how to make your body more alkaline. I also suggest using Modifilan for at least 2 to 6 months, every day. Can also add the Modifilan powder to your toothpaste. Empty 4 capsules into the above mix. |
